The dismantled parts of a concealed mechanism laid out on a bare oak trestle table in an empty stone hall: lengths of corroded iron wire, three small wooden pulleys, a waxed cord, two brass pins and a split oak block with an empty socket. A pale worn ring in the flagstone floor shows where people once stood.
